Pregnancy shifts your centre of gravity, changes the load on your lower back and increases the amount of fluid your body holds. Lower back pain, pulling in the hips and legs that will not fit into your shoes by evening are not unusual. They are the logical consequence of several months of steady change. Prenatal massage is a way of getting regular relief from them.

How we adapt the treatment

You lie on your side, supported by pillows under the bump, between the knees and under the head. Never face down, and never for long on your back, because lying supine can let the uterus press on the vena cava. Pressure stays light to medium, and we always work the legs toward the heart because of swelling. The lower back, hips, shoulders and neck get most of the attention, since they carry most of the change.

When to come

• Most often from the second trimester, when discomfort starts and the pregnancy is settled.
• In the first trimester only after speaking to your obstetrician.
• As often as you like: every two to three weeks right up to the due date.
• Say the word any time the position stops being comfortable and we will reposition you.

What we will ask you

Before we begin we need to know how many weeks you are, whether the pregnancy is uncomplicated, whether your blood pressure has been rising, and whether you have swelling in your hands or face. These are not formalities: for some conditions massage is not appropriate and we would rather send you back to your doctor. If your obstetrician has specifically recommended or advised against massage, please tell us when you book.

Frequently asked questions

From which month can I come? Most often from the second trimester, roughly the fourth month. In the first trimester we only offer massage if your obstetrician has specifically approved it.

Will I have to lie on my stomach? Not at all. You lie on your side with pillows under the bump, between the knees and under your head. You never lie face down or for long on your back.

Do I need a doctor's approval? Not for an uncomplicated pregnancy. We do require it if the pregnancy is high-risk, your blood pressure is raised, your hands and face are swollen, or you have given birth prematurely before.
