The lymphatic system has no pump of its own. Blood is driven by the heart, but lymph moves only through muscle action, breathing and pressure from surrounding tissue, so if you sit all day, or stand all day, it simply slows down. The result is ankles that swell by evening, heavy legs and a waterlogged feeling. Manual lymphatic drainage restores that movement.
Lymphatic vessels sit just beneath the skin, which usually surprises clients: a treatment that does this much barely seems to touch you. Your therapist uses very light pressure, a slow rhythm and a strict order: first opening the drainage nodes in the groin, armpits and above the collarbones, and only then moving fluid from the edges of the body toward them. Firm pressure would collapse the vessels; lymphatic drainage is not a deep massage and should never be sold as one.
